DIY SLIDING CABINET BARN DOOR HARDWARE

I LOVE Sliding Barn Doors. I don’t know why or how this happened. I was born in New York City. When it was time for me to move to Florida, I narrowed potential areas down by selecting urban areas. I am NOT a country girl. Hell, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a real barn door! But, somehow, someway, I developed the love of barn doors. Since my home doesn’t have any area or room that could accommodate my need for a barn door, I went with the next best thing – A CABINET!!!

What are your thoughts about this creation?

Nowadays, you can buy barn door hardware kits, but these doors were made with diy barn door hardware. It’s functional and customizable for any project size. These instructions are for two barn doors measuring 38.5″ X 18″ each.

You will need to adjust the quantity of hex bolts, screws, nuts, length of flat bar aluminum and washers will need to be revised based on the size of your project.

I’ll walk you through the steps:

DIY BARN DOOR HARDWARE – TOOLS

JIGSAW

  1. Clothesline pulleys. You will need to take them apart. I have to admit, this step drove me crazy! The pulleys were purchased at Home Depot. I only paid $3 each for them, but the price has increased a bit. They are now available for $5.98 each. HOLY INFLATION!
  2. 2″ hex screws (I used 3)
  3. 1″ spacers (3) The nylon spacers come in a white color, but you can spray paint them in any color.
  4. 1.5″ W, X 1/8″ thick Aluminum Flat Bar (varying lengths depending on your project)
  5. 1 package of 1/4″ Washers (I used 4)
  6. 1 package of 1/4″ locking nuts (I used 4)
  7. 1/4″ x 1″ hex bolts (4)

1″ Spacer
2″ Slotted Hex Head Screws
Lock Nuts
1/4″ Washers
Aluminum Flat Bar (they did not have the 96″ bar in stock at Home Depot when I went to take photos)
The Full Monty 😊

I had my besties as Home Depot cut a large piece of plywood into two doors measuring 38.5″ X 18″

WHEEL ASSEMBLY

You’ll need the washers, locking nuts and hex bolts. Since I needed four wheels, I used for of each.

The first step will be cutting the Flat Bar Aluminum. I purchased one bar that measured 36″ long and needed four 9″ long pieces. If this is your first time cutting through a metal bar, DO NOT be afraid. It’s much easier than you think. You’ll need a good jigsaw with a blade for metal. It will slide through like butter!

Here are my recommendations:

RYOBI JIGSAW

JIGSAW BLADES

When cutting the metal bars, please remember to where protective glasses and be fully clothed 😂 😆 . The tiny, hot metal pieces can and do fly around. Use a clamp or clamps to hold the metal in place. Once the bars have been cut, pre drill your holes into each bar using a strong drill bit. I prefer titanium bits.

THE TRACK

I cut a 96″ long aluminum flat bar to 72″ for the track the wheels will roll on. Adjust your bar length accordingly. Pre-drill holes in your furniture piece and the metal bar.

You will need a nut driver drill bit to drill the hex screws into the barn door track. You can use a wrench, but the drill bit is much easier. Here is an inexpensive set that will get the job done.

NUT DRIVER DRILL BIT SET

Test everything out before moving forward. Assemble the track and make sure all of the holes are properly aligned.

PAINT

Once all of the holes have been pre-drilled, spray paint your wheel assembly, the barn door track and all of the nuts, bolts, washers, etc.

Barn door kitchen cabinet hardware paint progress using oil rubbed bronze by rustoleum

I used Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint for the metal components. This has been my “go to” for all metal finishes on projects in my home for years. It’s a metallic spray paint that I just cannot live without.

You can purchase two cans here:

Assemble the hardware to the doors and re-assemble the barn door track. Add the wheels and YOU’RE ALL SET!
